I purchased these for EVERY window in my house, and we love them. We have had to return two panels becuase the light came through spotty but they were defective panels I think as I have about 20 panels in my home and not one of them smell and they are all great at blocking light. I wouldn't say they are 99% light blocking but maybe 95% it really depends on the color of fabric you get. The darker the fabric the better they do at blocking. We have 4 panels that are tan and they are about 95% light blocking, the blue ones are about 97% and the black ones are true to the 99%. We purchased the extra liner for our son's room to make the tan curtains a true 100% room darkening as he doesn't sleep well if he sence's any light (he's 2).
We followed the directions when we opened the package and put them in the dryer for about 10-15 min's when we took them out to get rid of wrinkles maybe that's why they have no oder as well..maybe the dryer does something I don't know but we have no issues and have recieved many compliments on how nice our curtains look! The thing I love the most I think besides the light blocking is that it helps reduce the heat/cold that comes into the house. For $10-$20 a panel it is so worth the price!
I actually bought these panels to put at the end of my large windows to block the little crack between my room darkening blinds and the window case. I spent a lot of time trying to find something attractive, thin and that would hang on the pole. They worked great. I hung them behind other curtains we had and they hung easily onto the pole in between the other hanging curtains. They aren't particularly heavy but they do keep the light out. The color is very dark but put behind the light white curtains they look quite nice.
