I work nights at a police department. 12 hours shifts. When I come home at 6am, its bedtime, and the sun is not stopping me. My husband and mine's bedroom has a sliding glass door right by my side of the bed, and with these up, 99% of the light is blocked. It is amazing. It took me 4 panels to cover a standard sliding glass door, and I even attached velcro to all of the edges to make it a solid panel so no light snuck between and pierced my eyes. Especially since we have two boisterious cats that like to sun bathe in all of the windows. Well with the velcro on, they can slink in behind the curtain from one of the outer sides, and do whatever they want between the glass and the curtain. It's not going to wake me up. These work really great, and are the cheapest blackout curtains I have found. WARNING: When you purchase these, they are going to be very very wrinkled and you will want to dry them to make them unwrinkled and actually attractive, not just practical. WASH THEM IN THE WASHING MACHINE FIRST AND THEN DRY. Whatever material they use on the outer side that blocks the sun has to be wet before being tossed in the dryer, and cannot be over-dried or it MELTS and makes the curtain stick to itself, and makes holes in the back fabric. Found this out the hard way and had to buy a few new panels. It's really great that these are machine washable - makes spring cleaning a breeze, but just be careful when drying them to get out those wrinkles
When my mom started working the graveyard shift, she had a lot of trouble getting to sleep during the day. After the initial 2 weeks, which is, she found out, the usual time it takes for your body to get used to the night shift schedule, she was still having problems going to sleep and staying asleep during the day.
I did research on what the best option would be for curtains that block out light, and these were the best choice. I got her the*black ones because in her case she needs to have as much darkness as possible. It was amazing the moment I was replacing them how they IMMEDIATELY changed the room. It was as if it was 10 at night, when in reality, I was putting them up around 3 in the afternoon! She's been falling asleep much quicker and easier ever since I purchased these curtains.
We were also pleasantly surprised to find that they block out noise... I don't know how they do it but it works! We live in a somewhat busy street, so any little noise can be heard, and the ability to block as much of it is crucial, especially for someone like my mom.
I was so amazed that I got another set of gold-colored curtains for the living room. Not as drastic as the black ones, but they also do as good a job at blocking noise and light. It gives our living room such a private, cozy feeling. Both her bedroom and our living room have sliding glass doors, and for both we got two sets of 2 curtains. It's the ideal height and width for standard-sized glass doors.
As a side note, my mom works at a very widely known home improvement store where they sell light-blocking curtains, and even with her employee discount, it's still not as good a deal as this one! We're very happy that we got these curtains, they are very effective at what they're for and look great on any room, whatever the color!
